Soundcloud Preview: soundcloud.com/christian-s-smith/blue-scatter-lp-preview

My first full length album 'Blue Scatter' was definitely not planned - an accident almost. in fact I expected it to be an EP, until sometime in May where it became clear that the scope of the project was expanding beyond that.

During the first days of lockdown at the beginning of April I recorded an improvisation that became the seed for the music that I made over the following five months. Almost all of the sounds are processed acoustic material that I have been developing in my practice for quite a while now.

My hope for this music is to give the listener a brief respite and that it maybe even takes them on a journey to some far away place. At the same time I believe it shares a little bit about how I walk in, perceive, and listen to the world.

our beautiful tree
beautiful time
the gravity and lightness
wiping away
blue scatter,
a line cut by
hand.
clearer in the first place,
anything words
this world was not like that
everything & all its utter sound
a lot of words
but just for practical reasons.
truth and its utter sound.
wastes of the beauties involved,
some kind of life—
all the remotest parts
—in the city, in the jungle,
blurred calligraphy.
the contact
entrance into braiding and flow
how clustered marks move on the page
big things up close
the wall, world against world
facility of tile in
mosaic notebooks
braiding and breathing a correspondence
in the open background
smooth and constantly broken
radical displacement everywhere
a gauze of reckoning and smuggling,
writing on the wall
go on now;
you gone,
with clouds
plants
thing notes
more light
the word is a person & there is laughter
a piece cut off
mere something aside,
in no ordinary arrangement.
into the room unexpectedly,
the phone rings
books nearby
I dream
from hand to hand,
nothing but detritus—
the background of things

I'm very grateful to the handful of friends and colleagues that have given me invaluable feedback and mentorship as I developed the music. Your patience as I spammed the different iterations over the summer is much appreciated, and it would not be what it is without you: Marek, René, Daria, Joop, Cristiano, Jesse and Vlad.

I want to give a special shoutout to my younger brother Hugh. He and I used to make music together as teenagers, but we haven't had the opportunity since then to do something like that. I'm happy and grateful that he jumped in at the end as co-producer and engineer.

Thank you Mom and Dad for believing in and supporting me over the years, it's incredible to think that 18 years ago I started playing this instrument that would take me all over the world, and it was only possible because of you.

Lastly, my heartfelt gratitude to Mark So for giving me permission to use his words in my music, this album is dedicated to our time spent together with Douglas Farrand 3 years ago in Pico-Union.
